The Peoples of the Salish Sea

Our work is grounded on the homelands of interconnected Coast Salish nations whose knowledge systems sustain this bioregion.

Puyallup
spuyaləpabš — Tacoma, home of our program. Salmon people of the river that flows from Tahoma.
Duwamish
dxʷdəwʔabš — People of the Inside. Chief Si'ahl's people. Stewards of the river that bears their name.
Suquamish
suq'ʷabš — People of the Clear Salt Water. Chief Si'ahl's mother's people. Builders of Old Man House.
Nisqually
sqʷaliʔabš — People of the River Grass. Billy Frank Jr.'s nation. Fish-in defenders of treaty rights.
Muckleshoot
bəqəlšuł — People of the Prairie. Valerie Segrest's nation. Leaders in First Foods revitalization.
Tulalip
dxʷlilap — People of the Bay. Hibulb Cultural Center. Leaders in language and cultural revitalization.
Snoqualmie
sdukʷalbixʷ — People of the Moon. Guardians of Snoqualmie Falls, a sacred site of origin.
Stillaguamish
stolə́gwilš — River People. Guardians of the Stillaguamish River watershed and salmon habitat.

The city of Seattle is named for Chief Si'ahl (c.1786–1866), who was both Duwamish and Suquamish. His words remind us: "The earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth."
